Australia's dominance

Australia have won six of the thirteen tournaments, including three in a row in 1999, 2003 and 2007. Their 2023 title in Ahmedabad came after losing their first two matches, a reminder that one-day World Cups reward teams that peak at the right time.

India: two titles, two eras

India's 1983 win at Lord's, as outsiders against the two-time champion West Indies, is widely credited with transforming cricket in the country. The 2011 home win in Mumbai made India the first team to win a final on home soil. They reached the final again in 2023 after winning every match up to it.

The last time Africa hosted: 2003

The 2003 World Cup was jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya. It was the first World Cup held in Africa and the first with 14 teams. Some moments that shaped it:

  • The Wanderers final: Australia beat India in Johannesburg, the same ground that hosts the 2027 final.
  • Hosts out early: South Africa went out in the group stage after a rain-affected tie with Sri Lanka in Durban, following a miscalculated target.
  • Kenya's run to the semi-finals: the co-hosts reached the last four, the deepest run by a non-Test team at a World Cup.
  • India v Pakistan at Centurion: Sachin Tendulkar's 98 in a famous chase remains one of the most-watched World Cup innings.

The 2027 tournament returns to many of the same grounds: the Wanderers, Newlands, Kingsmead, Centurion, St George's Park, Harare and Bulawayo all hosted games in 2003.

Records to watch in 2027

Stats such as most runs, most wickets and highest totals change every tournament. Rather than list numbers that could go out of date, we'll publish a records tracker once the tournament begins.
